Is the "Buddymoon" Trend Right for You?

There have been lots honeymoon trends over the years; from remote island getaways to adrenaline pumped adventures, the list is endless. One of the latest crazes to pop up in the honeymooning scene is the “buddymoon” trend, which means that instead of going away with just their spouse, couples are bringing their friends and family along for the ride on their honeymoon.

Long gone are the days of sipping cocktails privately with one’s partner by the pool, as couples are bringing more of their friends along for the trip. Based on a recent survey conducted in the United States, 12% of the study’s respondents have reported taking part in joining a group honeymoon “buddymoon” within the past five years.

The rise in the “buddymoon” trend can be partly credited to major celebrities like Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux, who brought their famous friends Jason Bateman, Courtney Cox and Chelsea Handler along for their honeymoon. It’s not just actors who are in on it, though, as famous singer-songwriter Alicia Keys and her producer husband Swizz Beats, as well as, country singers Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, jumped in on the “buddymoon” bandwagon too.

Experts have suggested that the change of trends in honeymooning amongst couples could possibly be due to the loss of the “special”  feeling of this period since honeymoons aren’t really a turning page for a lot of people anymore; more and more couples live together before getting married, and many would have likely taken romantic trips together before tying the knot.

What’s more, with wedding customs and traditions getting more relaxed over the years, the honeymoon tradition has also shifted. Case in point: As more couples are choosing to have destination weddings, it’s no surprise why couples would extend invitations to their friends and family during their honeymoon period, as most of them would have already traveled abroad for their nuptials.

While unconventional, the “buddymoon” offers a few perks for couples looking to lighten the load with their honeymoon expenses. So, going on a trip with friends not only allows you to spend time with people you like, but also split the bill easily. That way, everyone is happy and the party keeps on going.

So, how do you decide if the “buddymoon” trend is right for you?

This all boils down to how you and your partner feel about spending extended amounts of time with each other’s friends and maybe even family. Talk to each other and list down the pros and cons; for most couples who have been living together before marriage and have traveled the world together, going on a “buddymoon” would make a lot of sense, especially if they want to spend more time with their loved ones in the time after their wedding. Yet, for some couples, the “buddymoon” might be too obtrusive during this special period, especially for those couples who don’t get to see each other often or who have never lived under the same roof before.

In the end, whichever route you and your spouse choose, always be considerate of each other’s feelings and keep an open mind for healthy communication.
