The Ceremony

Prince Harry and Ms Markle tied the knot on 19 May 2018 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor. Unlike the royal tradition of getting married on a weekday, the couple decided to wed on a Saturday unlike most royals before them—the first of many traditions they broke.

Unlike the usual bridal parties, Ms Markle decided to forgo the practice of having adults as her bridesmaids. Instead, her bridal party consisted of children including Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Harry’s godchildren, Ms Markle’s goddaughters, as well as the children of her closest friend. Prince Harry’s best man was filled in by none other than his brother, Prince William.

The ceremony was attended by about 600 guests, which included members of the public and all three of Princess Diana’s siblings, one of which did a reading during the ceremony as well.

Ms Markle’s entrance was nothing short of breathtaking in her gown as she did a solo walk down the aisle, another first in royal history. Although she was met halfway by Prince Charles who accompanied her the rest of the way to her groom.

Bride & Groom Outfits

During the days leading up to this highly anticipated event, the design of Ms Markle’s wedding dress was a tightly kept secret. Ms Markle eventually made her appearance in a simple yet stunning all-white boat-neck timeless Givenchy dress.

Her veil, on the other hand, was a 5-metre long silk tulle that was hand-embroidered with the national flowers of each Commonwealth country. Her look was completed with a diamond bandeau tiara which belonged to Queen Mary (on loan from the current Queen) and Cartier earrings and bracelet.

Sticking to the theme of elegant simplicity, Ms Markle’s makeup look can be described as the “no makeup, makeup look” with a smokey eyeshadow, filled-in brows, pink lips and an almost bare skin with her freckles on full display—just the way she likes it.

She was also said to carry a bouquet that was handpicked by the Prince himself. It included sweet peas, lily of the valley, astilbe, jasmine, astrantia and forget-me-nots—Princess Diana’s favourite. Her royal bouquet also included the traditional sprig of myrtle, a symbol of hope and love.

The couple changed into what would seem as more comfortable party-wear. Prince Harry went with the classic tuxedo while Ms Markle wore her second wedding dress, a halter-neck Stella McCartney with an emerald-cut aquamarine ring which belonged to Princess Diana and is said to be a wedding gift from the Prince.

The celebratory reception had the setting of an intimate sit-down dinner where guests were said to have dined on posh burgers, candy floss and entertained by celebrity DJ — with Idris Elba taking the stage at some point.

Just like every other fairytale wedding, the night ended off with a spectacular fireworks display, signifying the start of the journey for the newly conferred Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
