Band of Brothers: The Duties of A Groomsman
2018-08-07
As a groomsman, you’re given the honour to stand with your buddy on one of the most important days of his life. As a groomsman, you might not have as many duties to fulfil as a best man would, but the list is still there. However, your role is just as important to the couple and wedding at large.
In addition to standing with the groom as he recites his vows, here are six other duties that fall into the hands of the groomsmen.
Plan the bachelor party
Bachelor parties are usually planned by the best man. However, it doesn’t hurt to offer a hand in planning. Planning together with the rest of the groomsmen might just help you to grow closer to each other and truly be “brothers” on the wedding day.

Groomsmen have to be prepared to take part in various activities or to consume unique combinations of food as part of the gatecrashing custom. However, this practice is usually for Chinese weddings though there might be similar versions of this for other customs.
Attend every pre-wedding event
If the couple plans to hold a few pre-wedding events, it is compulsory for you, as a groomsman to attend all of them. Not only will this be a show of support to the couple, but it will also help you better understand the dynamics of the wedding party which might help to eliminate any tension or drama among the wedding party members.

Considering that this is pretty much one of the most important and nerve-wracking days for your buddy, it’s important to keep him calm while preparing for the wedding.
Ushers/Greeters
While bridesmaids man the reception table, groomsmen might have to act as ushers or greeters for the couple’s guest. The groomsmen have to station themselves around the wedding venue to guide guests to their places. Apart from that, groomsmen have to be ready with basic information on the wedding schedule, venue details and other necessary information, such as the location of restrooms or parking details for the guests.
After-party help
Wedding venues in Singapore usually require event tear-down almost immediately after the wedding. While the venue staff members might take care of this, the couple might still require your help in tearing down the place or to do a last round of sweep to ensure nothing or no one was left behind.
