Buying Guide: Choosing A Round-Cut Diamond Engagement Ring

The most popular engagement ring in the local market, round-cut diamond engagement rings currently takes up over 75% of the total number of those sold every year. Also one of the most studied diamond cuts, its flattering symmetrical outline has made it one of the most favourable diamond cuts of all time.

Due to their incredible features, round-cut diamond engagement rings have always been in demand. Do however, keep a look out for the following when it comes to selecting one!

Features

A round diamond engagement ring features a table, a rounded girdle, as well as a triangular or kite shaped facet. It has 57 or 58 facets with 33 of them located on the crown while 22 are on the pavilion. The additional 58th facet consists of the culet facet. The facets in a round-cut are responsible for its exceptional light reflection abilities, although this is depending on the size and facet placement.

Cut

The cut quality essentially affects the ring’s light reflection abilities. In the case of a shallow cut, the light’s reflection ability is affected, as light will tend to escape sides of the diamond. For deeper cuts, the diamond reflects at sharper angles, prompting it to escape through the bottom of the diamond. In this case, do keep a look out for diamonds with optimal facet angle for maximum brilliance and light reflection features. A depth of 57% to 65% and a table of 51% to 64% will offer the optimal brilliance for round-cut diamonds.

Clarity

This feature refers to this flaws and inclusions on a diamond, including small dark spots and blemishes. As most of these defects are not visible to the naked eye, do borrow a magnifier from your jeweller to check for inclusions. For more cost-effective measures, opt for a SI1 instead of a VS2 since they both appear identical – an SI1 clarity is ideal for a round diamond engagement ring. Some inclusions, especially the ones located at the edges are susceptible to chipping so do avoid them if possible.

Colour

The colours of a round-cut diamond can vary from crystal clear to tint. The diamond’s colour ranges from a scale of D to Z; D being the clearest diamond. The yellow tint increases as you approach Z. As one may already know, the clearer the diamond, the more expensive it is. A round-cut diamond ring has excellent light reflection abilities, so there is little need to opt for an absolutely colourless diamond. You may choose from colours H to J for a white gold or silver band while K and L will look amazing on a gold band.

While choosing an engagement ring may be a daunting task, one can never go wrong with the classic round-cut. Not only does it have a flattering silhouette, it also comes in a wide range of settings to choose from. It may be more costly than its counterparts, but its sophistication and elegance are almost unparalleled. Don’t be afraid to explore your options on a wedding website before selecting the one!
