Pick The Right Blooms!
2015-01-14

From the bridal bouquet to floral centrepieces to wrist corsages, flowers breathe life and love into a wedding. But if you can’t tell a daisy from a daffodil, here’s a five-step guide by Blissful Brides.

 1. Do your research

At the start of the planning stage, most brides-to-be have little idea about what they really prefer when it comes to wedding flowers. Keep magazine tears and computer printouts of the type of flowers and bridal bouquet styles that you prefer in a research file. You may realise that you prefer calla lilies to roses, for example. That way, you can share your vision with your wedding florist.

 2. Consult a professional

Bridal floral services usually include bridal bouquets, venue décor at churches and hotel ballrooms, bridal car décor, corsages and boutonnieres! Yet, these are not necessarily handled by the same florist. Most bridal boutiques and hotels have tie-ups with their own florists, so you might have to check if you can hire external florists if you have unique requirements.

 3. Decide on a budget

You will have to decide on a budget during the discussion with your wedding florist. Your florist should generally be able to draw up a detailed list of bouquets, corsages and boutonnieres, car and venue décor, floral hairpieces and flower baskets to fit within your budget. It is only when you have the budget that you can confirm other details, like the type of flowers to use.

 4. Choosing your flowers

Since our weather is usually hot and humid, do take care to choose only blooms that can withstand the heat. And when it comes to bridal bouquets, there are various styles you can consider, such as the posy (a small, round bouquet), the arm sheaf (where long-stemmed flowers are cradled elegantly in the arm) and the cascading spray (a teardrop-shaped bouquet that flows romantically downwards).

 5. Caring for the blooms

Usually, you will receive your bridal bouquet the night before or on the morning of your wedding day. Meanwhile, floral set-ups are usually done on the wedding day itself. But you shouldn’t have to worry about whether your wedding flowers will wilt as you’re walking down the aisle, as florists will ensure that the floral foam is moist for them to last throughout the day. To keep your blooms fresh and beautiful, avoid direct sunlight and try to keep the arrangements within an air-conditioned environment.
