Hatha Yoga: Why You Should Try It. | Beauty & Wellness for your wedding

From a handstand to positions seemingly unachievable by the human body, this ancient practice is often known for its ability to transform both the mind and the body. A combination of flexibility and strength, this workout requires discipline and dare we say, perseverance. That’s right, we’re talking about yoga.

When it comes to yoga, many would assume flexibility and strength to be its basic requirements – because how else is one supposed to achieve that warrior or bridge pose? So when we were offered the chance to try out a Hatha yoga class at Fit Eleven, we were honestly a little intimidated because at this point, touching our toes is an achievement.

Located at Big Box, level 7, the yoga-centric studio is relatively accessible (to the west siders). However, it may get a little confusing once you are at Big Box so do note to use only lift lobby A.

A bright space that exudes calming vibes, we were greeted with friendly smiles before being handed the key to our locker and a towel. The studio itself is a quiet, bright and spacious area with mirrors and windows for walls – how cool is that?

A subsection of yoga, Hatha yoga emphasizes on physical exercises aimed to help one be in better control of the both mind and body. Our instructor, Rosemarie, started us off with simple stretches and too special care to make us feel welcomed. With her patience and clear instructions, we thought we did a pretty decent job as first-timers.

“The principle of yoga is to calm the mind and make the body healthy. That’s why we always combine breathing exercises, meditation and a lot of stretching. Stretching releases tension from our bodies,” explains Rosemarie.

Thankfully, we were not expected to do some serious contortions and the class progressed at a manageable pace. Once we got the hang of the breathing exercises, we could actually feel the physical tension melting away. In that short hour, we managed to experience zen like never before and left the studio feeling a whole lot more accomplished and energized.

So if you’re looking for a way to rid of your wedding planning tension while maintaining a healthy body and mind, yoga is definitely the exercise for you! To keep in shape, a balanced exercise regime with combinations of Hatha yoga, YoResist and Yobarre is recommended. These classes have specific focuses with the last two being more intensive, keeping one toned and aid the slimming of both core and hips.

Although we understand that time might be a luxury brides can’t afford, two weekly classes, together with a healthy diet, will be all you need to achieve that dream wedding figure. Plus, feel more energised as slay your wedding prep duties!
