The Secrets Behind An Everlasting Sparkling Ring

Just like all your other precious possessions, your engagement ring requires proper care. While it is natural to visit the jeweller, there are other fuss-free methods to preserve that bling. Here, we look at what may potentially cause your diamond its shine and how you can best maintain the ring.

Exercise

While exercise does wonders for your health, it’s not exactly an activity you’d wish to put your engagement ring through. While perspiration and chlorine may rob the ring of its shine, there are also potentially risks of chipping the gemstone when engaging in more strenuous exercises. All in all, we’d recommend safekeeping your ring during all physical activities.

Moisturisers

Containing ingredients such as shea butter, skin moisturisers will add to the dullness of your ring. While there is nothing wrong with having a skincare routine, it is advisable to first remove your ring before applying the moisturiser, to minimise the damage to your princess cut engagement ring.

Ring maintenance

Despite the potential damage that cosmetics and skincare products may cause your ring, rest assured that there are steps you can follow to restore the sparkle of your ring:

  • First, prepare a solution of warm water and dishwashing liquid. In addition to dishwashing soap, you may also consider body wash or shampoo. However, do note to avoid any moisturising products as they tend to leave an unwanted coating around the ring. Chlorine, bleach, baking soda and toothpaste should also be avoided, as they may leave scratch marks or further damage the ring.
  • Dip the ring in the solution for approximately twenty minutes.
  • Brush the ring softly with a toothbrush
  • Rinse the ring with warm water.
  • Dry off your engagement ring with a soft cotton cloth before allowing it to dry. Avoid paper towels as they may leave scratch marks on the gemstone.

How regularly should you clean your ring?

By polishing your ring once a week, you’ll be able to keep dirt build-up at bay. Do however, consider sending it to the local jeweller twice annually for a thorough ring cleaning session.
