Yay or Nay: Should You Live-Stream Your Wedding?

Following the recent viral live-streamed video of Thai bride, Jutathip Nimnual, being left at the altar, live-streaming weddings have become a hot topic. While no bride wants the world to be privy to unfortunate events on their big day, newlyweds are able to share the intimacy and memorable moments of their wedding ceremony with loved ones who are unable to attend.

So should newlyweds live-stream their wedding? We have here a list of pros and cons to help you find out.

Pros:

Include All Loved Ones

Regardless of how early you send your invitations, some guests may not be able to attend due to unforeseen circumstances. Though that may dampen the celebratory mood, you can share the intimate moments of your big day by live-streaming your wedding, so that your loved ones are able to still witness your union.

Inexpensive

If you’re planning to do it yourself, live-streaming your wedding is almost cost-free and can be done by anyone. Depending on how you choose to live-stream your wedding, all you’ll need is a phone or a camera, a tripod and a stable internet connection.

While you may have already engaged a wedding videographer, the live-stream video offers a raw and different perspective of the wedding. So when you are feeling nostalgic, you can watch both videos and enjoy memories of both the reality of your wedding and one that shares only the positive memories.

Cons:

Editability

As mentioned, live-stream videos cannot be editing while it’s being streamed. This may not be ideal, especially if you wish for a wedding that is video-perfect. If that’s the case and you’re set on live-streaming your wedding, plan for the parts that'll be live-streamed and angle it accordingly to ensure the focus is on your spouse and you.

Having Someone In Charge

If your camera is safely mounted on a tripod, there may not be much for the person-in-charge to do as your wedding is being streamed, they will still have to monitor it as well as be aware of the camera’s angle. As the one in charge of the stream, he or she will also have to time the recording perfectly, knowing when to start and stop the streaming. However, if you’re planning to get someone to shadow you in order to live-stream the event, it may be best not to get a guest, family or bridal party member to do this. They will not be able to enjoy simply witnessing your union, but they will also have to take on the role as someone “working” at your wedding, which can be off-putting for most.

Technical Difficulties

As much as you may prepare for them, there are certain technical complications that are beyond our control. Weak internet connection, grainy footage, constant buffering or audio difficulties may put viewers off.

To avoid such situations as much as possible, considering hiring the professionals. With their experience and expertise, the live-streaming process may be much smoother for the viewers and you.
