5 Tips to Handle A Postponed Wedding Due to COVID-19

Due to the global pandemic, plans have been postponed or cancelled altogether. It is an especially massive blow to many who have invested time, effort, and money into the making of an event — newlyweds-to-be included. If you are one of the many who has to delay your wedding in this trying period, worry not. Here are 5 ways you can manage and plan your delayed wedding.

1. Find a support system

If you’ve been looking forward to saying your vows and kickstarting a shared future with your significant other for months or even years, it’s only natural to feel shocked and devastated at this unexpected turn of events. Don’t bottle your emotions in, and feel free to turn to your friends and family for emotional support if you do need any.

According to psychotherapists, you may find your sense of calm more easily if you allow yourself to go with the initial shock of disappointment. Verbalising how you feel and acknowledging your feelings will help you make better sense of your experience, which in turn allows you to assess the situation objectively and make cool-headed decisions about what to do next.

Alternatively, you may also consider penning down your feelings or turn to activities that provide anxiety relief, such as meditating, walking, listening to music, taking a long bath, or watching a comedy.

2. Make a decision

Once you’ve come to terms with the situation and your emotions, it’s time to look at your options. Remote solemnisations might soon be legal (Note: This article was last updated on 29th April), which means you can either:

1) Postpone both your solemnisation and banquet,

2) Be legally married first and have your wedding reception on another day, or

3) Simply hold your solemnisation now and do away with the entire ceremony altogether.

Whichever option you choose, there is no right or wrong; the decision is entirely up to you and your partner!

3. Inform your vendors

Now that you have made your decision, you will need to relay them to the people who will make your wedding happen: your vendors. Inform them of your decision and once again, enquire about their availability dates if you’re planning to reschedule.

Chances are, you’ll have to be quick in confirming them, lest the next couple takes your spot. This is because competition for your vendors will skyrocket once the circuit breaker is over! Thus, be sure to consult with your wedding vendors as soon as possible and don’t forget to check if the wedding deals that you’ve paid for are still valid.

4. Reinvite your guests

When you’ve settled on the next available date, the next step is to inform your guests. You may do so by sending out another set of invitations — be sure to refer to your budget plans (add title tag to hyperlink -“How Should You Budget For Your Wedding?”) to check if you should go ahead with this — or simply announce it through your social media accounts.

5. Be prepared for a smaller turnout

Unless you and your partner have decided to postpone the wedding until a year or two later, you will have to be mentally prepared for a smaller turnout. After all, your newly selected date was given on a much shorter notice, and some might still be wary about going out and about even after the circuit breaker has been lifted.

Make sure to give yourself ample time to gather the RSVPs before you confirm the maximum number of guests with your respective vendors, so that you won’t spend unnecessarily.
